CHAPTER 1 Introduction This study of world literature begins where many do: with Goethe, but then it will go backwards from Goethe before it goes forward. The term world literature itself derives from Goethe’s neologism Weltliteratur, recorded by his personal secretary Johann Peter. Literature Scholarships: Some people are born with penchant for literature. Books are what they crave for. An educational pursuit in the domain of literature will not only arm you with subject knowledge but will get you in possession of plum career assignments like writer, editor, lecturer and many more. This collective monograph analyzes post Central and Eastern Europe through the paradigm of postcoloniality. Based on the assumption that both Western and Soviet imperialism emerged from European modernity, the book is a contribution to the development of a global postcolonial discourse based on a more extensive and nuanced geohistorical comparativism. Literary Studies is the study of written works of the imagination, of which poetry, drama and narrative fiction constitute today the most familiar types or genres. Most students and teachers of literature, however, see it as a more complex matter.
